Grls I Know - Cathy

Describe yourself without mentioning work.

I would describe myself as a strong, independent, but compassionate woman.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa but my family also lived in a suburb of Chicago for about five years as well. I consider Iowa to be my home though. I went to college in Omaha, Nebraska.

How long have you lived in New York City?

I have lived in NYC for about 5 1/2 years now (it will be 6 years this June).

Tell me what it's like living in New York.

Well, it's a tough city to live in. It's definitely not for everyone. I moved to New York knowing only my older sister and one or two former internship friends. It was the hardest transition I've ever experienced but also the most rewarding. Here are a few words to describe it: stressful, expensive, and rude.

In light of the recent election, how does it feel to be a woman in the United States right now?

Honestly, it feels pretty terrible. I'll leave it at that.

Did you have any strong female influences growing up?

Yes, definitely. I had my mother as well as my mother's mother (my grandmother). My mother always worked, even if it was part-time. Not because she had to but because she enjoyed working and wanted to set a good example for her four daughters. My grandmother is who I have to thank for all of the great dating advice. She has always been strong willed and taught my mother to be so as well.

Does ‘being a woman’ feel like an active always-present part of your life, or is it not necessarily something that influences your day to day? Or, neither?

Being a woman feels like an active/always-present part of my life because I'm one of four girls in my family as well as because I'm a single woman living in a big city.

What is your experience with female friendships? I have some girlfriends who come from big girl gangs and others who have single close friends all over the place.

I have female friends from all walks of life. Because I've lived in 3 different states, I have girlfriends all over the country. These include childhood, middle school / high school, college, and after-college. The majority of my female friendships are from college since I was in a sorority and was actively involved.

Does it feel easier or harder to make female friendships as you get older?

I think that it gets harder. After 5 1/2 years of living in NYC, I am happy to say that I have made a number of girlfriends and finally feel at home here.

Is there anything you wish women would talk about more with each other?

I would have to say life after marriage. I hear women talking about working so hard to 'find the right guy', and then get married, and then have children. But what about after that? What are their goals, dreams, and wishes post-marriage?

Tell me about your first job.

My first job out of college was at an experiential marketing agency.

What is your job now?

I am currently at the same workplace, but in a different role as a Producer. I started at the agency as an intern and worked my way up to Production Assistant, then Associate Producer, and now Producer.

What motivates you to work hard?

My motivation comes from my parents who taught my sisters & me the following: work hard, be kind to others, and always tell the truth. In addition, I always felt like I had to prove myself, coming from a family of very intelligent people.

What advice would you give to young women starting out in your field (or any field) - or maybe to your younger self?

I would tell them to be confident, no matter what. I believe this to be the most important piece of advice, especially for young women. I wish that I would've 'come into my own' earlier on, but I guess every flower blooms at a different pace, right?

Who (or what) is your spirit animal?

My spirit animal is the leopard because I am silent but swift and shy but bold.

What song have you been playing on loop lately?

"All 4 Love" by Color Me Badd.

Dinner with any celebrity (living or dead)?

Princess Diana because she was such a beautiful, strong, and selfless woman.

What was your first concert?

My first concert was John Mayer. He's so dreamy!

What was your most recent concert?

My most recent concert was the Full Moon Festival this past August.

Guiltiest pleasure?

My guiltiest pleasure would have to be sweets... any kind of candy or ice cream.

I like to think of all my girlfriends as being part of a magical coven of strong, independent witches. As a witch, what would you say is your biggest power?

As a witch, I would say my biggest power is advice giving. I always want to cheer my friends up and make them feel as special and important as they are to me.
